Most people I know either love or hate running. I am team love running, but still enjoy shaking up my running routine to prevent the dreaded running rut. For those of you who dread running or find yourself getting bored while running give these running hacks a try.
1. Mix it up: Running on the same course can get boring quickly, especially if you are on a treadmill–can you say snooze-fest? I usually run outdoors, but still like to vary my outdoor running course. If I start out running on roads, I like to switch it up (for me usually about a mile in, but you could switch it up sooner or later) to trails, sand, grass, or even a track.
2. Don’t have too many course options? Try varying your pace and intensity throughout your run. Running intervals are a great (and quick) way to get the benefits of running in a shorter amount of time. So after a warm up, run for 30 seconds at maximum effort (if you are working at maximum capacity, you will be counting the seconds until it’s time for the easy jog/walk), followed by 2 minutes of easy jogging or walking to catch your breath and allow yourself to recover for the next hard run interval. Six rounds of this will get you at 15 minutes of running intervals, and you can end with a 5 minute easy jog and stretch. You can tweak the maximum/ easy running time and rounds based on your current fitness level.
3. Make a kick ass running playlist! Don’t underestimate the power of music to give you that extra boost of inspiration to keep going when you are feeling exhausted. Personally, I live and die by my playlists. I know that sounds extreme, but I really can feel the difference in the quality of my runs when I have music playing during my runs. You can download apps like RockMyRun which have ready to playlists that adjusts the music to sync up with your steps or heart rate (if you are into that kind of stuff–I am!). You can also find running playlist used by top runners and athletes by googling running playlists.
I’d love to hear how you shake up your running routine! Feel free to comment below or ask questions.
